FBI OFFICE—9797 AERO DRIVE, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

Special Agent Morris Towers clicked his pen repeatedly and placed two fingers against his left temple. Seated across from him in a padded chair was DEA assistant director, Thomas Hardy. The room temp was hyper-chill as Towers liked it that way. There was a clear pitcher of ice water with slices of lemon, golden and floating near the waterline of the pitcher.

Towers said, “Anything happening?”

“My people tell me Springer met with Michael Severin at his restaurant, the Seven Shores,” Hardy said, a half-full glass of lemon water in his hand. “A small time gambler named Beaumont was there and another guy I didn’t recognize but looked like muscle. Springer works fast.”

“He is bold,” Special Agent Towers said, nodding. After re-checking the file on Cole Springer, the FBI man and the DEA were comparing notes.

“Can we trust him?”

“We can trust him to do things we can’t. Springer is more than just a scoundrel. Do you know how he kept afloat financially while his bar was floundering?”

“Have no idea. It’s freezing in here, Morris. What is it with the A/C?”

“Helps me think. The rumor is Springer was busting drug dealers while wearing a DEA jacket. He would come in heavy and take their money.”

“Without back-up?”

“Yes. It gets better. He stole the jacket off one of your people, a guy named David Ryder.”

“Same name as Springer’s girlfriend, the CBI agent.”

“Ryder was her ex-husband.”

Hardy whistled and leaned back in his chair. “What’s with this guy?”

Towers shrugged and said, “He likes dancing near the fire, I guess. In spite of what you’re seeing, Springer was once a top-notch Secret Service man. Somewhere along the line he developed authority issues and they threw him out. His wife died and they said that threw him; changed his personality. He’s tried some odd ventures, settled on the bar in Aspen. Supposed to be a pretty good pianist.”

“Well, we know he likes to play around,” Hardy said. “Working with him, I don’t know. This could get dicey.”

“Oh, it will, count on it. For our part we have to maintain surveillance on Springer and watch for subterfuge on his part. He’s quite the operator almost a con-artist. News around Vegas is that there is an open contract on Springer by a crime boss named Red Cavanaugh and yet our Vegas agents tell me Springer was with Cavanaugh a few days ago. Something is going on we don’t know about and he is being cute about it. Right now we have another concern. Daniel Reyes is in town and that means he’ll hook up with Michael Severin.”

Hardy leaned forward in his chair and poured more water into his glass. “One of our guys picked up on Reyes and I’ve got somebody on him. When he makes contact with Seven we can be there. There is something going down or Reyes wouldn’t be around as he is not popular, or so our C.I.s tell us, with Seven’s people, in particular a guy named Lester Groves, street name, ‘Shanks’.
