In silence, I helped Hazel clean up the kitchen then went to my bedroom to wash up and change. The visit to the village and all that despair I felt when I couldn’t find Hazel made me feel dirty.
I changed into brown trousers and a dark green shirt and made sure my hair was combed back and neat. This outing wasn’t much, but it was still an important ceremony, and I felt like I had to dress up.
When I stepped out of my bedroom, Hazel was exiting hers, and my breath caught. She looked beautiful in a light green dress with golden embroidery. She had pulled half of her hair back and tied it in a braid, revealing her long, smooth neck.
My lips itched, wanting to taste her skin.
“Anything wrong?” Hazel asked, rubbing her neck.
I shook my head, clearing my mind and sending the heat in my core away. “No. Are you ready?”
She nodded.
We took the horse, and I guided him through the forest, going north toward the Greenarch Hill. At this time of the night, pink fireflies hovered in the air, and some leaves shone bright whenever the horse’s legs touched them, lighting the way.
With her chest pressed to my back and her hands on my waist, Hazel seemed enchanted by the world around her. My heart squeezed when I glanced over my shoulder and saw the wonder in her eyes.
In the flower’s name, this wasn’t easy. How was I supposed to stay still when she was so beautiful, so innocent, and looked so amused by her own court? I was starting to think that staying by her side might not be the best idea. I probably should send her away with Mahaera while I organized all the rest. Besides being safer with the goddesses, I would focus on what I should: finding an army.
Otherwise… otherwise, I wasn’t sure what would happen.
About ten minutes into the ride, Hazel spoke. “Will you explain to me what’s going on and where we are going?”
Holy petals, I had forgotten I hadn’t told her about it yet. “Nymphs are powerful beings. They possess a unique kind of magic that ties them to the land. They can bless fae with their powers, which makes the blessed one very lucky. Mahaera set it up so they will bless you tonight during one of their ceremonies.”
“Oh” was all Hazel said.
Though the horse Mahaera had given us was fast and strong, it took us over two hours to arrive at the Greenarch Hill.
“We’re here,” I told Hazel just before we stepped through the last line of trees.
Right in front of us was a low hill, alight with the green-hued moonshine. Atop the hill were long wooden pillars twisted like tree trunks, forming a wide arc on the ground. And among them were the floral nymphs.
“Wow,” Hazel whispered, watching them from over my shoulder.
I could understand her admiration or amusement when looking at the nymphs. With their green hair, fair skin with a faint green hue, bright green
