Chapter 11
The next morning I sent Everett away with a kiss despite the fact Iâm still not too thrilled with last nightâs escapadeâthe one in Scooter Springs, that is. I completely approve of the escapades that went down in Honey Hollow.
I offered to drive Evie to school since Everett had a big case he needed to gear up for, and my heart warms as Evie and I pull up alongside Honey Hollow High. Just looking at this mammoth stone building sends a shiver up my spine as if it were a virtual time machine, capable of delivering me right back to my miserable high school years.
The wind picks up and redirects my attention to all the black and yellow streamers strung up everywhere.
âLook at all that school spirit,â I muse. âYou must be gearing up for a big game this Friday night.â
âOnly the biggest,â she says. âItâs homecoming.â
âHomecoming?â I shout the word in a panic. âEvie, when were you going to tell me this? Arenât you going to the dance? Youâre going to need a dress? Iâm going toââ
âMom,â she drags it out, loud and curt, in only the way a teenager can to let me know sheâs had enough. âCalm down, would you? The game isnât until tomorrow, and the dance is all the way on Saturday. Thatâs plenty of time to find a dress.â
âOh wow, our very first homecoming. Iâve got to call Glam Glam. And, of course, your dad and Uncle Noah will be there in the stands. I canât wait to see you do your thing out on the field again.â
âYouâre not coming to the game, are you?â Her voice hikes to unnatural levels and her eyes bug out with fright.
âYes, weâre coming to the game. We wouldnât miss it for anything.â
âYouâre missing it,â she belts it out like a threat. âI already told you I donât want you guys at the games. And donât think I didnât notice a few weeks ago when you snuck in the back and made out like a couple of sex-starved hippies.â
âEvie. Weâll sit as far away as possible.â
âAargh! How embarrassing. Iâm going to die right there on the field. I might as well pick out a casket instead of a homecoming dress.â
âGeez. Okay, fine. How about the last half of the game?â
âI donât negotiate with terrorists. Oh, and today and tomorrow are half days. Principal Hickey insists the teachers pick their noses at a meeting todayâand tomorrow nobody cares about school anyway because the people of Hillbilly Hollow care more about pig skin than IQ points.â She gives a quick wink. âDonât worry, Mom. This blip on the map is still my favorite place in the whole wide world. See you at twelve-thirty, and weâll go shopping?â
âWhat?â My mouth contorts into all sorts of odd, yet happy shapes. âYou bet. Iâm not missing a chance to help my daughter find the perfect dress for her very first dance in this town she loves so much.â I wink right back at her.
