Chapter Seventeen
Grant was muttering things as he came running in, still soaking wet in his dark gray uniform and black cape, his marauding hat tilted jauntily to one side.
He slid to a stop between me and the armor. The armor paused in complete surprise. Grant raised both hands and started performing a serious enchantment.
Two pairs of hands grabbed me under my arms. I didn’t resist as Lark and Pep pulled me away.
“Let’s go,” ordered Pep.
“What about Grant?” I asked.
“I’m pretty sure His Majesty of Magic can take care of himself against one little seven-foot suit of armor,” said Lark.
She pushed open the door and dragged me through. Pep brought up the rear. I caught one last glimpse of Grant standing over the crumpled suit of armor before I found myself in a hallway with white walls and an old pine floor.
I felt much better, but I also felt a sudden chill. In the midst of the attack, I hadn’t realized how hot it had been in the costume room.
“Let’s just sit for a minute,” suggested Pep. She sank to the floor before Lark or I could react. Her face was red and she was breathing hard.
My legs also felt wobbly, so I too let myself collapse to the floor. “I saw where the thief went. It wasn’t through this door. He got away.”
“I didn’t see him,” said Lark. “The costumes blocked my view.”
“Did he have another sword?” Pep asked.
“I’m afraid he did,” I whispered.
Just then the door opened and Grant stepped through. For a guy who had been up all night, he looked immaculate, and I had a perverse longing to grab some of the finger paints we used in the haunted house and smear them over his perfectly tailored uniform.
“How could you possibly not have a spot on you?” was all I could think to say.
He chuckled. “Is everyone all right?”
“I would be better if you had a speck of dirt. Anywhere. I would settle for a pant leg,” I grumbled.
“Ignore her. She’s ungrateful when she’s awake,” said Lark.
“Mind if I join you?” Grant asked. He proceeded to sit down next to me so that our arms rubbed against each other. To be fair, there wasn’t room for him anywhere else, but I hadn’t given him permission. I decided not to point that out.
“What happened?” he asked.
“We could ask you the same thing,” said Lark.
“You could. The only problem is that I’m the investigator,” he said.
“I’m sorry. I don’t understand,” said Lark.
“I think you understand perfectly,” said Grant, sounding serious for the first time.
Knowing that Grant had a point—that is, we had to answer his question sooner or later—I started to talk. He had saved us, after all.
“We brought Mom into the library. Meg and Audrey joined us. Then I realized we should check on the swords. We came upstairs and that’s when we saw someone in a black cloak running down the corridor.”
“So you naturally gave chase,” said Grant.
“Naturally. The thief ran straight into the haunted house. The supernaturals were doing a dress rehearsal tonight because the haunted house is closed.
