Sabrina sipped from her coffee cup. "What in Mother Earth are you asking me about your boss? Do you think my sister or I had something to do with her accident?"
"Technically, she wasn't my boss." I avoided playing the blame game for fear I wouldnât get any answers from her.
"Whatever. I heard what Stella said, and I'm one hundred percent on board with her. That woman shouldn't have taken that house in the first place. If they'd asked us to list it, I would have told them to set it on fire and pray no one called it arson." Another sip from the cup. "That house is poison."
"Can you explain why you think that? I've never heard anything specific other than the rumors that it's haunted."
"Of course it's haunted. Everyone knows that." She opened her desk drawer and pulled out a nail file, then absent-mindedly filed her left pinky nail. "If I could see ghosts, I'd be scared to go there, most definitely, but that's not the reason the supernatural don't like it."
"Then what's the reason?"
"You really don't know?"
I shook my head.
Sabrina laughed. "Wow. I'd have thought that grandmother of yours would have told you seeing as she was in the thick of it."
I'd been sitting in a leather chair on the front side of her desk and curled my toes in my boots. "The thick of what?"
"About fifty years ago humans here in Swan Hollow believed evil witches had infiltrated their precious land. Little did they know the land actually belonged to the witches, and of course, they weren't evil." She moved onto another nail. "One of the Alabaster daughters, Agnes, was accused of being a witch. So a group of men went to the house and without getting into the gory details, they killed her. Your grandmother was there. She saw it happen."
My eyes almost popped completely out of my head. "Agnes Alabaster was murdered for being a witch?" The Alabaster family, Nana said, was one of the few families whose real purpose, authentic being, was kept secret from other supernaturals. She never explained why, and I'd never really asked. "My grandmother never mentioned any of that to me."
"Of course she didn't. She and Agnes were best friends. Everyone thought Agnes was her charge, but I'm not sure if anyone knew for sure." She waved her hand. "I'd have to ask my parents, but from what I remember hearing, what they did to Agnes was similar to the Salem witch trials. Your grandmother hid in the house because she was afraid she'd be killed too."
My grandmother never once told me anything about that. "Did you ever hear mention of a box or anything?"
She tilted her head. "A box? I don't know what you're talking about."
Sabrina didnât make eye contact when she answered that question. Iâd always heard that meant the person was lying, and I couldnât help but wonder if Sabrina was then.
I stood to leave. "It's okay. It's nothing." I smiled at her. "Thanks for the information. I appreciate it.
