Understanding Your Attorney’s Daily Life
One of the biggest stresses for clients and attorneys is determining how you should touch base. This is an issue because of the awkward timing and intensity of surprise events. Many family law attorneys tend to be workaholics. What you see on television and in the hallways at court may appear to be relaxed, superconfident lawyers. But behind the scenes is a lot of suppressed stress and anxiety about getting the work done and pressure to win the next case. Full-time family lawyers commonly have fifty to one hundred active and inactive cases, and any of them could flare up at any time. An old client might return with a new emergency that needs immediate attention. A current case has a new development that needs a response as soon as possible. Some documents that are due today are missing some important information.
When you call to discuss a minor point or ask a general question, the attorney may not be available or may seem very abrupt. Try not to take it personally. Ask whether this is a good time to talk. If necessary, schedule a better time to meet with the attorney. As we mentioned earlier, remember, when your case is in crisis or heading to court, you’ll want your counsel’s total attention.
Attorneys generally have an hourly rate and charge by the tenth of an hour (six minutes), so make your contact specific and productive while respecting your attorney’s boundaries. Speak with an assistant if possible. In fact, it’s very helpful to develop a positive relationship with someone in your attorney’s office other than your attorney.
