“I MUST BE EVER-MINDFUL of my choice of words,” Lucille said, taking her dictionary from the shelf and dusting it off. “Miss Jessie will notice every little thing because, of course, she’s a librarian.” Then she decided to put the dictionary back as she did not want her wording to seem unnatural. “I will simply be myself,” she said, and began.

Dear Miss Jessie,

I was telling someone just the other day how fond of you I have become and in so short a time too, and how glad I am to have you living right next door. I have already told you so much about everybody else, and now I think I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I was born and raised over in Wishing Well where I still have a sister living. One of the highlights of my life was attending Hillister Baptist College where I also graduated with honors. Bible was my major and I guess I must have read the book a dozen times when I was in school and I don’t know how many times since. It did me the world of good too. But what makes me so proud is that my dear Juliet Ann has followed in my footsteps and was a straight-A student just like I was. She said that she wanted to do things just like her mother. Now isn’t that sweet? I also worked in the library, just like Juliet Ann did, so I know all about what you’re going through and if I can be of some help I’ll be so very happy to lend a hand, or whatever.

As you have probably heard, my Juliet Ann turned out to be a happy well adjusted person. As you know there are so many cases just the opposite around here. There’s Zeda Earl’s two. One living in sin and the other living in trash with some tramp more than three times her age, calls himself a junk man and is proud he can make a living that way. Well I guess that’s all right if you’re happy like that but you know they’re not. She’s not anyway. How could she be? Then there was Esther Ruth’s grandson. She was the best thing in the world to him and what did he do but vanish into thin air the first chance he got and Sue Ella said it was all because he went to the other side of the fence, but here you come along and say you saw him in this country, so I guess maybe he went over and came back again. It’s so hard to keep up with things. The world is going so fast and all.

What I really wrote to talk to you about is our new club. I do hope that Maga Dell Spivy won’t get in our way too much. The way she laughs I sometimes wonder if she’s on something. Dope I mean. Her eyes have a funny look in them too. Now she’s not exactly our kind do you think? But she’ll do of course.
