When I was in Rome on a photo shoot of the Vatican gardens, I went out on the balcony of a friend's apartment and found this painterly view of St. Peter's Basilica and the spumoni-and Italian ice-colored buildings on his street. I wanted the painting to feel like a stage set. I began the painting with a very careful linear drawing in an H pencil. I typically do this so there isn't much smudge on the paper. If I choose later on to get rid of the line once the painting is complete, to make the image less graphic and more three-dimensional, no marks will show. I mostly work with Winsor & Newton A- and AA-rated watercolors in tubes to maintain saturation of hue.
