Namu had died on July 6, 1966, after a year in captivity, before the August release of Namu, the Killer Whale (later re-released as Namu, My Best Friend). Director László Benedek (1905–1992), a Hungarian émigré who fled the Nazis, had also directed Death of a Salesman (1951) and Marlon Brando’s debut, The Wild One (1953). Blacklisted during the Red Scare, he turned to television. His cast from Namu would go on to shows like General Hospital and Barnaby Jones.4 His underwater cameramen had already worked with sharks. The film was perfect for contemporary 1960s family entertainment. Its star was a little girl who would make the connection between humans and orcas, and its marketing slogan, “Make Room in Your Heart for a Six-Ton Pet!”

Tom Glazer Sings the Ballad of Namu the Killer Whale. United Artists Records UAL 3540, 1966. RBCM R2891.
