Two variations on the makara. Drawing on left by Nik Rashiddin Nik Hussein; drawing above by Norhaiza Noordin.

There is a very strong connection between the images of the Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet theatre) and many of the motifs in woodcarving. This tree of life (pohon budi) (see full figure page 21) shows a clear representation of a makara. From the collection of master puppeteer Pak Dollah of Kelantan. Photograph by William Harald-Wong.

A typical perahu of the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the 1950s, clearly showing the bangau carved in the shape of a makara, with its head back and snout curled into its mouth. The shorter opposing okok, with its gaping jaws, is also an obvious depiction of the mythological creature. The bangau of a boat was so highly valued that during the monsoon months of inactivity, it was removed from the perahu and brought back to the fisherman's compound for safekeeping.
