Chapter Twenty â Isaiah
The night was a good one. Or it had been until one of the last people I wanted to see showed up to harass me. Fortunately, he brought Charlie with him as a buffer. A one-on-one confrontation between Garrett and myself might have ended in some unpleasant bloodshed.
As the owner of the property I now occupied, Garrett greeted me first, nodding slightly and extending his hand. âIsaiah. Iâm glad youâre safe. Have you settled in all right? Do you need anything?â
When had Garrett become the gregarious innkeeper? Jackie must have accorded him the job of keeping me in line. Not an easy task, as my mother had so often discovered.
âThank you. Iâm comfortable, or I will be when I have some peace and quiet and a chance to relax.â My blatant hint that he should leave flew over his head and on âtil morning.
âI hear youâve brought dragons with you?â He peered at the evening sky.
âFive, as well as some of my staff and their families. Supernaturals of all varieties. I hope it doesnât upset your puristââ
âIsaiah!â Charlie rushed between us. âCool it.â He looked out toward the ocean. âWhereâs Red? I wanted to thank her.â
âThe dragons are off hunting.â
âHunting?â Garrett asked in that annoying way he had of sounding perfectly civilized while still questioning my intelligence.
âDonât be concerned. Theyâll remain invisible as long as theyâre here. Iâve warned them off humans, boats and game of any kind until I can find out if Fin will take them in.â
âIâm more concerned with the safety of the human race.â Garrett was frowning now, his usual expression when I was around.
I sensed another presence and looked toward the trees. âDid you bring Sash or Rick in case things went south between us? Probably a wise move.â
A male materialized beside Garrett. Charlie stepped back, bookending the visitor and giving me a much better view. He was a good-looking guy, a little shorter than my six feet seven, dark haired, straight-nosed, lean, fit, and reeking of magical power. Fae magic. Ancient Magicks. He tilted his head in thought at the same time I did. What was this?
âWhat is this?â the stranger asked. âIs your true demeanor so repulsive, demon, you feel the need to disguise yourself as fae?â He advanced on me, an aggressive move. âI do not find this deception to be humorous, if that is your intent.â
Charlie stepped forward while Garrett watched with a barely-contained smile. What the hell was going on? âIsaiah of the Bas Demonic Level, Iâd like to introduce King Finvarra of the Faerie Court.â
The king ignored the intro. âYou must allow me to see your true self as you are seeing mine. I will not discuss the war with an impersonator.â
What. An. Ass. Reminded me of Caelen. âI have no intention of discussing the war with anyone at this particular time. But I offer no threat to the King of Faerie.â I held up a hand to placate him, looking him over once more. His eyes, now glittering with anger, had turned from a deep purple to black.
