BACK HOME AGAIN, I played with Fitz for a while, to his excitement. It was one of those fishing line type of toys—a stick attached to a string and a dangling furry-looking doll that was meant to resemble prey of some kind. The fake prey also made chittering sounds that made Fitz positively wild. He kept pouncing on the creature until he wore himself out and trotted over to a sunbeam.

I picked up Rebecca and curled up on the sofa. I read happily for the next couple of hours, then decided I probably needed to get some stuff done around the house. Housework was never my favorite thing to do, but I could make myself more enthusiastic about it if I created a list of things I needed to accomplish. That way, I could tick off the items as I completed them. It was silly, but it gave me a sort of rush. Much more of a rush than cleaning for cleaning’s sake did.

I played music while I worked. To prove to myself that I could enjoy new music as much as Grayson and Abby, I streamed a band that he’d recently recommended to me. I didn’t think it was the kind of music I could sit still and listen to for very long, but it worked very well as clean-up music.

Afterwards, I decided to jump into another chore that I never looked forward to—meal prep. Since my schedule at the library meant that I could be working until nine p.m. some nights, it made sense to have meals ready for me to eat when I came home. There was also the matter of preparing healthy lunches for the breakroom at the library. Eating out was all well and good, but I didn’t have the money to do it regularly.

Before I knew it, it was dinnertime. I called up Grayson to see if he wanted to come by and partake in some of the stir-fry I’d just put together.

“Hey there,” he said warmly when he picked up the phone. “I was just thinking about you.”

“Same,” I said with a smile. “I was just wondering if you wanted to walk over and eat supper with me.”

“Ordinarily I’d love to, but for some reason, I’m totally wiped out tonight. Maybe I need to catch up on my sleep or something. Can I take a rain check?”

I said, “Of course you can. Hope you can get some good sleep tonight.”

He chuckled. “We’ll see. I’ve been yawning so much that I’m not sure I can stay up until eight. Then I’ll probably be up around two and won’t be able to fall back asleep.”

“Early to bed and early to rise.”

He said wryly, “We’ll see. I’m not sure if it’s automatically going to follow that I’ll be healthy, wealthy, and wise, no matter what Ben Franklin said.”

I ended up turning in pretty early, myself, which meant I started the day early. I was able to do some floor exercises and light weights before eating breakfast and getting ready.
