Chapter Fifteen

We stopped at Mango Magic Spa on the way over so that Ian could drop off some takeout Italian for Sally.

“Look at us,” Sally said. “All working on a Monday night. What are we like?”

Ian lowered his voice and fake whispered to Sally, “She never gives me a break!”

Sally giggled. “You get plenty of breaks.” Sally caught my eye. “Did you like our gift?”

“The sign? Yeah, it’s great. Very fitting.”

“Good. You can take it with you.”

“Err?” I didn’t have any trips planned, and if I did, I wasn’t sure a humorous workplace sign would be top of my packing list. The thought of a confused cruise ship housekeeper examining a crazy to work here sign in a guest cabin was mildly amusing, though. From my own cruising experience, I knew they received a number of eccentric guests. I just didn’t like to think of myself as potentially being one of them.

“When you move into the office.”

“Hmm?” My gaze flicked to Ian. “What have you been saying?”

“Nothing!”

Sally’s head went back and forth between me and her boyfriend. Apparently, one of us was misleading her, and I was fairly certain it wasn’t me. Sally’s eyes fell on me. “I thought you were moving in with Stone?”

“What?!”

Sally’s hands latched onto her hips and she gave Ian a very irritated look. “Is this one of your bits? Your jokes?”

“No, no. Just a little miscommunication, honey.” Ian turned to me. “I mentioned to Sally about Stone offering to team up together. Combining the businesses.”

“You didn’t just mention it, you said Tiffany is definitely going to work with Stone.”

“I’m sure I wasn’t quite that certain, was I?”

“You were.”

“Why did you say that?” I asked Ian. “It was just a bit of dinnertime conversation.”

Ian shrugged. “It’s obvious.”

“What’s obvious?” Sally and I both asked together.

“You obviously are going to work with Stone. You just didn’t officially decide it yet.”

“But I like having my own business! What makes you think I would want to work with Stone anyway?”

“All his resources! He’s got whole teams of guys, Tiff. It would be super useful. Imagine having a six-man team with assault rifles to back us up.”

“We do not need heavily armed assault squads in our work, Ian.”

“It might make some people answer questions a bit more snappily.”

“No doubt. They’d also probably just tell us what they think we want to hear.”

“Perfect!”

“Look, Sally, nothing has been decided with Stone and me. He simply mentioned our businesses could be teamed up and that we might work well together. I didn’t agree to it. It’s just something we’re thinking about.”

Ian leaned over to whisper in Sally’s ear, “She’s totally going to do it.”

“I heard that! And I’m not.”

I decided. Then and there.

I liked being my own boss, I liked working alone(ish), and I was doing just fine as it was.

I didn’t need to add anyone else into the mix, no matter what they might bring to the table.

“I’ve made a decision. I’m staying independent.”

If I wasn’t mistaken, I caught the merest hint of
