Kakologophobia
MEANING: fear of swear words
ORIGIN: the Greek words kakos, meaning âbad,â and logos, meaning âwordâ
KAKOLOGOPHOBIA is the extreme fear of swear words, both using them and hearing them. The condition is incited by trauma, like getting yelled at for swearing or accidentally using lewd language in front of a grandmother, resulting in extreme embarrassment. Being the target of a barrage of particularly aggressive invective can also result in kakologophobia. Sufferers do whatever they can to avoid foul language, staying out of bars and away from habitual swearers. Exposure to profanity can cause profuse sweating, shaking, and vomiting; sufferers may flee the scene or cover their ears in defense. Those with a severe case of the phobia go so far as to avoid cursing that they end up reclusive. Alone, the kakologophobe can live in relative safety from any offensive languageâas long as they donât accidentally stub a toe.
THINGS TO AVOID: sailors, so the saying goes; comedy clubs; a lot of films; some rap songs; television after 9 p.m.
âPhobia Trivia
Kakologophobia is sometimes known as deprecophobia, and is a branch of logophobia, which is the fear of any word. There are a number of more specific swearing-related fears: mugouphobia (the fear of the word âbitchâ), katourophobia (the fear of the word âpissâ), skataphobia (the fear of the word âshitâ), and zomaiphobia (the fear of the word âfuckâ).
âStatistics
There are around 150 swear words in the English language. A 2009 analysis of recorded conversations published in Perspectives on Psychological Science found that an average of 80 to 90 words that a person speaks each day are swear words.
