CHAPTER NINETEEN
By the time we arrived back, it was early morning. Indigo had turned blue, lightening the sky enough to see the silhouettes of the buildings in Deadwood. The largest, the temple, where spikes pointed up against the fading stars, loomed over the smaller buildings. I moved my long waves over my shoulders, brushing flyaway hairs from my forehead and eyes as the wind picked up. I couldnât believe Iâd ever worshipped Freya as a teenager, or Estia or Lucius. Now that I knew the truth, the memory of it made me wince.
âWe can go from here.â Raiden walked me away from his siblings, who talked near the edge of the woods. I stood on the edge of some rocks overlooking our town from the east of the forest, which was known for having grizzly bears and wolves. âI can take you somewhere else. Anywhere. Until this is done.â
âNo.â I looked at him incredulously. âIâm going with you.â
His forehead creased. âYouâll get yourself killed.â
Aziel called from the tree line. âOr slow us down.â
My eyebrows furrowed. âSuper hearing?â
âWe all do to an extent, but Ledaâs was the best. Well, now itâs Freyaâs.â
My stomach knotted. âSheâll be dead by morning.â
âYes, she will.â We looked at each other for far too long before he finally looked away. âStill, Aziel is faster than the rest of us, so he will chase Freya should she run.â
I heard a low chuckle from where Aziel stood. âFinally, he admits it.â
âIâm still stronger than you.â Raiden glared, but the slight curve to his lips gave him away.
âNaomi. Edmund. Dora.â I snapped my fingers. âWe need to go. Now.â
âThalia needs to perform her rituals first, to break the cloaking spell. Sheâs the only one with magic powerful enough to do it,â he explained. âIf Freya runs, even with Aziel, she might have a chance at somehow getting away. I canât take that risk, Elle. Not this time.â
I understood, but I couldnât let the people I loved get hurt because of it. âHow long will it take?â
His lips parted, and a sigh escaped. âFive, maybe six hours.â
âSix hours?â My eyebrows shot up. âIâm not waiting that long. No way. Iâm going now.â
âYou donât have the keys. Sheâll kill you all once she realizes you donât have them.â
I kicked a small stone lying at my feet. The damn things had dissolved once theyâd been used. Stupid spelled keys. âI have to do something.â
âYou can wait. She wonât kill them. Theyâre her bargaining chips.â
âTheyâre my family.â I swallowed thickly.
âI know.â He leaned down, touching my cheek. âYouâre still cold.â
âBeing whisked through the night at god speed didnât help.â I tried to smile, but the fear for my family wouldnât let me.
âWhile Thalia does what she does, Iâll get us inside somewhere.â He looked down at the town. âA hotel? Maybe you can get some sleep until we can go.â
I crossed my arms over my chest. âIâm going back. I have to do something.â
âWe both know all youâll do is put them in more danger by showing up empty-handed.
