The eight-hour train ride back to town was much less pleasant in third class. The duchess offered to buy his ticket, but he declined. She already cared for his parents. It felt wrong to allow her to do more, especially with Gwen gone.
That thought soured his stomach, even though he hadnât been able to eat anything since watching her disappear.
Sally remained steadfast, believing Gwen would come back, but how? According to Gwen, her sister was kidnapped at sixteen and had never made it back through the wall, though she must have tried. Of course, heâd heard it said people lost their memories in faerie and that time passed differently. Perhaps Ophelia had gotten lost in the magic.
Perhaps Gwen would, too.
Then again, Gwen wasâ¦well...Gwen. If anyone could come back from the other side of the wall, it was her. Heâd never met anyone so frustratingly determined.
But he still saw her in his memory, Aristotle clutched to her chest, panic twisting her face as magic pulled her backward through the door and out of this world. She might have expected to blow herself up, but she had not anticipated that which made it hard to believe anything. Or perhaps, made it easier to believe everything. He wasnât certain which was worse.
He was certain that the Marquis of Rutledge was a criminal and a danger to the realm and to those he loved. And now that his family was as safe as possible, it was time to do something about the man responsible for so much death, responsible for bringing back the book that made it possible for Gwen to be stolen from everyone who loved and needed her in their lives.
But first, Tony had a few questions.
