The English language belongs to the major language family known as Indo-European. Indo-European is one of the world’s most important language families in terms of the number of modern languages that belong to it and the number of people who speak them.

The Indo-European language family includes a wide range of tongues that are—or have been—spoken in a region that originally ranged from Iceland in the west to India in the east. Within the language family of Indo-European there are a number of branches, each of which contains various languages that all share many similar characteristics and often have similar words for the same thing. Scholars have identified a total of ten branches of the Indo-European language family.
