Chapter 9

Merry was jerked to a stop, a hard tug on the rope threatening to send her tumbling onto the stone floor. She caught herself at the last second and glared at the guard who was in charge of her. With stone on all sides of her, blocking out the worst of the taint, she was feeling much more alert now. Lack of food and water meant she wasn’t ready to fight back, not when they were outnumbered so badly and even thinking about magic made the pounding in her head ten times worse, but she was ready to exploit any non-magical avenue she and her friends could use to escape.

As they spilled into a large space filled with wide grey pipes overhead, Merry ran her gaze around in hope of finding something that would help them get the better of their captors. Instead, she stiffened at the sight of over a dozen militia and two mages. One of the mages wore a purple robe, the other was the Fire mage she had gone up against hours earlier. Tension thrummed through her. If he happened to throw a fireball her way now, she had nothing to deflect it with. Even more concerning, neither he nor the Spirit mage were the ones she had faced in Greystone.

How many renegades did Lord Andel have working for him? From the subservient way the Greystone militia reacted to the arrival of those from Andelmine, there was little doubt who was in charge.

Piles of bedding were set up in neat rows on one side of the magical blaze, as well as a number of packs, while boxes and barrels of supplies and the makings of a camp kitchen were on the other side. The comprehensive set up suggested people had been staying inside the dam for some time.

Karl called over the Spirit mage and then pointed at Kassandra. ‘You need to break her oath to the guild. Now.’

Kassandra gasped and he rounded on her, his expression harder than the rock at Merry’s back. ‘The guild has made you soft.’ He pointed at the water skin attached to her belt; the one she had allowed Merry and her friends to drink from. ‘I need to know I can trust you.’

‘Of course you can trust me,’ she said, her face pale. ‘You’re my brother. I would never do anything to hurt you.’

A cruel twist to his mouth, he shifted to point at Ellen. ‘Kill her.’

Kassandra reeled back, a hand going to her mouth as he leaned closer. ‘Use your power and crush her spine.’

Merry reached into herself, seeking her magic, fear blotting out the pounding in her temples as Kassandra turned to face her friend. She would not let the enforcer hurt Ellen. Her magic sluggishly answered her call, weakened by deprivation just as her body was. She focused on the air
