Chapter Eleven

Guarda stepped into the room, closing the door behind her with a soft click.

For all that it had been a quiet motion, almost delicate, the sound rang hollow in my ears like the lid of a tomb coming down on top of me. She took a step towards me, her head tilted to one side, sending strands of pale blonde hair brushing over her shoulder.

“Did you really think you could sneak in here like a thief, an’ I wouldn’t notice? That I wouldn’t sense the presence o’ the body I been occupyin’ for a century?”

Her voice was light, almost chiding, like a grandmother scolding a child. But my skin crawled like a host of spiders were marching over my back. I wanted to get up, to get out of there, but my legs were all but useless, seized up in one giant ache. I couldn’t push myself up with my arms. All I could do was lie on the floor while Guarda stood over me in my own body, gloating.

I glanced around, but couldn’t see Daschel anywhere and even though I was fairly sure Angharad was still waiting for me behind the house (or hoped she was), it wasn’t as though I could go for my phone with Guarda standing right in front of me. No, I’d have to distract her somehow…

“An’ what did you think you was gonna do, comin’ here?” Guarda’s lips curled up, cruel in her amusement. “Did you think you was gonna warn them? That you was gonna steal this body back?” She paused to look down at herself, at myself, then. “Are you really that stupid?”

“I guess I am,” I managed.

She chuckled at that. “Just give up, girl.”

I gritted my teeth, trying to force myself to move. I wasn’t about to lie here and listen to this crap. I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction. I might not be a big time voodoo queen, but I wasn’t totally without resources. Angharad was on my side, at least, even if that was only to spite Guarda. And I had Daschel.

Well, if I could find him, that was.

I couldn’t see well enough in the dark, but he’d been touching me when I fell asleep, so I figured he wasn’t far. He’d probably found his way into the kitchen and his dog food. I could only hope he was safe and that Guarda hadn’t done something to him. My sandaled feet scraped against the floor boards as I tried desperately to get up, worried beyond measure for my dog. At the same time, though, I didn’t want Guarda to know he was with me—better he stay safe and hidden.

Guarda heaved a big, theatrical sigh, but there was a glimmer of malice I’d never seen in my own eyes before.

“Won’t give up?” She shook her head, as though disappointed. “I shouldn’t be surprised.”

“Screw you,” I snapped, stung past silence. “And get the hell out of my body!”

She sneered at me. “Oh, lil miss Peyton, swannin’ around, thinkin’ she’s somethin’ special.
