ONCE back in my body, I gave Joe and Rhonda a quick version of what I’d learned by typing it into a blank page of her word-processing program. The two of them huddled up to read it.
Rhonda was the first one to look up at me. “You saw this weapon in his head?”
I nodded.
Joe didn’t comment. He’d paid for lunch—oh wow!—and was folding the receipt up into his wallet.
“This is bad.” She pulled the computer closer and reread it. “I have to know how this thing works. If it really exists I have to have one of them so I can reverse-engineer it. See how to create something that will offset such an ability.”
“I doubt it,” Joe said, and we both looked at him. He clasped his hands together on the table and looked at both of us. “What? You said it yourself—when you pass through a person, you see what’s on their mind. Or rather what’s sitting around in their subconscious. Who’s to say this weapon just wasn’t a part of that? A wish or a dream?”
Then if it’s his dream, we’d better keep an eye on him.
Rhonda was shaking her head. “I still need to meet this guy and pick his brain. See what he’s coming up with that’ll do what he wants it to do.” She tapped her chin. “Might work off the same principle as the Soul Catcher.”
“Yeah, yeah—but what about this backing?” Joe looked from Rhonda to me. “What kind of organization is going to shell out that kind of money for research on a weapon to capture a ghost?”
I nodded. And what about Stephens? He hired the security for the fund-raiser.
Joe relayed my thoughts to Rhonda, who nodded. “Most definitely, ” she said. “Why else would SPRITE be at the Westin? It’s like Joseph said—it’s all tied together. We just have to figure out how.”
I continued to digest the images I’d just seen as we left the restaurant. The wind had picked up and was even colder. The wintry mix had descended. Kinda cool really. Atlanta didn’t get much in the way of snow. We usually saw ice.
And ice was dangerous. Dangerous because us Southern folks don’t know how to drive in weather. Period. Oughta see it when it rains.
Ack! Rain! Everybody put on the brakes.
Add snow in the mix? We’re talking parking lot.
The van was gone when we left. At least he’d been able to start it.
“I need to stop by Phoenix and Dragon before we head back to Little Five,” Rhonda said as she unlocked the car.
I nodded.
Once inside and in Roswell Road traffic, I half turned in the passenger’s seat. Joe . . .
He leaned in to rest his face between the headrests.
Joe, I need to know more about this warehouse, the one where Holmes was killed.
He shrugged. “Not much. Kinda a scary place if you ask me. Went out there Friday after the funeral—”
You were at the funeral? I bent my brain backward trying to remember if I’d seen him there or not.
