Chapter Seventeen

"We'll catch up with you guys at home. We actually have no idea what Edward is going to throw at us when we do track him down, so for now it's just safer if you and Zoe are at home."

Dorothy patted Adam's hand, looking at him with what she hoped was a more confident expression than she felt. Adam arched an eyebrow as he put an arm around Zoe's shoulders, steering her toward the car.

"Ma, you'd better be careful, or you'll have me to deal with as well." He and Zoe made their way down the sidewalk as Dorothy and Frank slid into Frank's car, headed toward Edward's house.

Pulling up alongside the curb, Dorothy pursed her lips tightly. "I don't see any lights on, do you?"

Frank shook his head, taking the keys out of the ignition as he opened the door. "Nope. Doesn't look good, but we can at least try, can't we? Let's give it a shot. He can't run forever."

The two of them made their way to the front door, and Dorothy raised her hand, rapping her knuckles on the door with a sharp knock.

Silence. She knocked again…..and a third time, as Frank peered around her into a window nearby.

Dorothy's frustration grew with each unanswered knock. She stepped back from Edward's front door, exchanging a worried glance with Frank.

"He can't have gotten very far," she muttered, peering through the nearest window. The interior was dark, lifeless.

Frank cupped his hands against the glass, squinting. "Place looks deserted. No furniture that I can see." He looked at Dorothy. "What the heck is that all about?"

Dorothy's heart sank. She'd been so sure they'd catch Edward here, forcing him to explain his cryptic words at the church. But the house stood silent, mocking her determination.

They circled the property, checking each window. Every room told the same story - bare floors, empty walls. No sign that anyone had lived here recently.

"I don't understand," Dorothy said, running a hand through her silver hair. "Where are all his belongings?"

Frank's brow furrowed. "Maybe he's been planning to leave for a while. That would explain the renovations at the B&B too - getting it ready to sell?"

Dorothy shook her head. "But why? And what's his connection to Corey? None of this makes sense."

They made one last round about the house, hoping to spot something they'd missed. But Edward's home remained stubbornly vacant, offering no clues to his whereabouts or his secrets.

As they walked back to the car, Dorothy felt a chill that had nothing to do with the cool afternoon air. Edward's disappearance only deepened the mystery surrounding the amulet, and she couldn't shake the feeling that they were running out of time to solve it.

Dorothy's frustration mounted as she and Frank climbed back into his car. She slammed the door with more force than necessary, earning a concerned glance from Frank.

"I'm so sorry, Dot. Where to next?" he asked, turning the key in the ignition.

Dorothy chewed her lip, considering their options. "The B&B," she decided. "We have to find something.
