Upstairs in Blair’s room, Lucas watched her stuff a duffel bag full of clothes. She moved back and forth from the bed to the closet. She tossed them in haphazardly. Lucas leaned against the wall. “Where will you go?”

“Anywhere but here. I’ve already overstayed my welcome.”

“You know Steph could be back later.”

She glanced at him, pushing a strand of her dark hair behind her ear. “You don’t believe that. And neither does that lunatic downstairs.”

“Ah, my auntie’s all right. A little high-strung but you kind of have to know her background. Actually, I think you two have a lot in common.”

“As if,” she said, shaking her head and opening a drawer. “She was this close to getting my fist in her face.”

Lucas laughed. “What about Pearl and Violet?”

“What about them? They’re not my sisters. I’ve knocked heads with Violet more times than I can count, and Pearl acts like she’s in charge of us just because she’s a few years older than me. No, it was a mistake coming here.”

“You’re telling me.”

She stopped walking and stood in front of him. “Then come with me. We’ll leave tonight.”

“Ah, I dunno about that.”

“We had fun today,” she said, lifting a pair of panties up near his face. He smiled. “See… I make you smile.”

“You do more than that,” he said. She looked down and noticed he had an erection.

Blair laughed, walking away from him as Lucas became flushed in the cheeks. “Then get a bag, and let’s leave this prison behind.”

From beyond the room, Anna called out, “Lucas! Is that you?”

Blair looked at him.

“It’s Anna,” he said.

She shrugged. “Well, if you’re staying. Then it’s been a pleasure.”

“Look, Blair, just hold up. Don’t leave without me, okay? I’ll be right back.” He turned and went out of the room and made his way down the carpeted corridor to Anna’s room. He pushed the door open to find her sitting on a single bed, reading. She always had her nose in a book. The room was basic. A single bed with a blue duvet, a pine side table, a closet for clothes and a TV. Not that much had been broadcast in the last two years according to Steph. But she had an old DVD player and would hook it up so they could watch movies, anything to get their minds off losing their mother.

“I thought I heard your voice. Did they find Steph?”

“No. She’s not back.”

“And what about Travis?”

“I saw him. Yeah, today. Doesn’t look anything like he did,” he said, gesturing that he had a beard and long hair. “He actually looked a little rough.”

Anna looked at her book again for a second before lifting her eyes. “Is he staying? I mean, is he going to look for Steph?”

He shrugged, walked over to her bed and perched his butt on the edge. “I don’t know. He didn’t sound like he was interested in anything except collecting a few things and hitting the road again.” He took a deep breath and reached over and picked up a chain that had once belonged to their mother.
