Cash didn’t understand what he was hearing and didn’t believe what Avery was saying. Somehow the officer had misunderstood, but whatever the reason, Grant and Kennedy were certainly no deserters. He’d trust them both with his life. He frequently did. He ended the call, and he had a lot to think about.

One thing’s for sure, there’s something wrong. Something very wrong!

He looked at Pérez. “We need to keep an eye out for Lieutenant Grant and Corporal Kennedy.” He explained what Avery had said, “They’re accusing them of possible desertion, which means someone has their wires crossed. If we see either of them, we need to give them a warning.”

“We’re supposed to be here in secret, Captain. Prospecting for cadmium, gold. Right now I’m not sure which.”

“We’re prospecting for Osama bin Laden. Nothing’s changed.”

“Except everything’s changed. That cop, Major Abdul Ahmad, he’s gunning for us. What was it he said, three days? After that, he’ll toss us in a cell. Unless we can come up with some gold.”

“I was thinking more along the lines of lead. The best solution for Major Ahmad would be a bullet in the head.”

Pérez grinned. “That should settle his ambitions to get rich, but killing a senior cop isn’t a good idea. We’ll have every cop for a hundred kilometers searching for us. Not that it bothers me. The guy deserves a bullet. It’s not worth the hassle, and if bin Laden is in the area, he could hear about it and put two and two together.”

“We’ll deal with Major Ahmad when the time comes. Right now, I’m worried about Grant and Kennedy. We need to divide our time between Abbottabad and Mansehra, try to find them. They’re in trouble.”

He looked doubtful. “Sir, it could compromise the mission.”

“If we do nothing, we could compromise Grant and Kennedy. We’ll visit Mansehra at the end of each day and drive around, see what we see.”

“It’ll be like looking for a needle in a haystack. As bad as trying to locate bin Laden.”

He shook his head. “Locating Grant and Kennedy will not be that hard. Wherever they go, they leave a stack of bodies.”
