CHAPTER 13

After a night of tossing and turning and sporadic sleep with nightmares of my childhood, I woke determined to face my own personal demon.

My mother.

But I couldn’t do it on an empty belly. Since Nelly hadn’t yet returned, I had to fend for myself. Leftovers from Josee’s dinner made me hum in pleasure.

I then headed over to the garage, only to realize I had a shadow. A glance behind showed Baptiste following.

I stood in the middle of the road as he stalked close enough to utter a rough, “Get out of the way before a car runs you over.”

“You’re still watching me, aren’t you?” Had he slept outside my apartment without me even realizing?

“Just making sure you’re safe.”

“Why would anyone come after me here? I never met any of those prisoners.” The only one who’d seen my face had died.

“You could just say thank you,” he grumbled as he strode past. Now I was the one following the really cute butt.

He entered, and it was just the two of us. A big gaping space shouldn’t feel intimate.

I headed for the coffee machine and tossed a nonchalant, pulse-pounding, “I think I might go see my mom after work.”

“I’ll go with you.”

I paused, putting the pod into the machine, and eyed him over my shoulder. “Why would you do that?”

“You shouldn’t go alone.”

“She won’t hurt me.” The woman did many things. Cuff, slap, berate, but she knew not to cross the line. Putting me in the hospital would have drawn attention.

“I’m going with you,” he reiterated. “This is not up for discussion.”

We might have argued some more, but his phone buzzed.

“It’s Joe,” he claimed just as mine beeped.

A text, also from Joe: Reports of strange activity at the library. Pls investigate.

My typed reply: Could you get vaguer?

Weird shit happening in the basement. Reports of people entering but not leaving.

Hunh. Now that had my attention.

I then typed: Aren’t you still with Renarde at the prison?

I am.

Trust Joe, though, to be keeping on an eye on things back home.

Home. Huh.

I glanced at Baptiste, who had already tucked his phone into his back pocket. “Ready to ride?”

“We grabbing Clive?”

Baptiste shook his head. “Only if you want to wait an hour. He’s still in bed.”

We headed out for the same truck we’d travelled in the day before. I clambered into the passenger seat.

“You do know if this is a haunting I can’t do much unless there’s an object involved in the poltergeist tethering. Ghosts aren’t magic based,” I informed him.

“The library isn’t haunted.”

I wasn’t so sure when we pulled up out front. It couldn’t have looked more gothic if it tried. Black stone, built to look like a church, with fancy scrolling and thick, heavy wooden doors, even a clock tower. The corners of the roof held gargoyle statues.

“This is supposed to encourage people to read?” I muttered, keeping a wary eye on the structure as we neared.

“It’s been around since the town’s inception.” Another old place in other words.

“It looks like it belongs in medieval Europe.
