Rendered invisible

Glynn (2014) identified that the social, political, and historical experiences of black offenders has been largely absent within criminal justice policy and much of criminological theorizing. Glynn further argues that this omission distorts and does not reveal the full extent of the problems black offenders’ face, when having positive outcomes while coming into contact with the criminal justice system as a whole. Freire (1970) points out that the oppressed are better placed at times to understand their oppression, and argues their voices must speak and be heard. Denzin (2010) similarly points out that for ‘subordinated and oppressed voices’ to be heard, they must be assisted in their desire to ‘transcend their silences’. It is hoped that by using intersectional approaches when conducting enquiries we will be able to lead toward eradicating multiple oppressions faced by so many sections of the offender populations and the communities they come from. For researchers to actualize cultural sensitivity with the dissemination process to increase ‘impact potential’, I am further calling for all of us to expand our ethical frameworks that govern much of what we do to anchor it firmly within a culturally competent framework.
