Chapter Nine

Look again, Raven. It might have bit me again and transmitted some horrible mutant disease.

“I don’t think horseflies carry viruses the way mosquitoes do,” I countered, doing my best to reason with Leo. We were back at the bench where it had all begun and waiting for Heidi to return. I’d finished off the lemonade and thrown the empty cup into the trashcan before taking a seat. The line at George’s food truck wasn’t long at all, so it wasn’t like we’d have to stand in line forever. “Besides, I’ve already triple checked the end of your tail. There is no swelling, so I don’t think the horsefly had time to bite you.”

Leo was sitting next to me on the bench with his tail tucked underneath him. He wasn’t about to let the horsefly get the best of him a second time around.

Speaking of seconds…

“We might have narrowed our search too much,” I murmured in contemplation, scanning some of the other food trucks, game booths, and craft tables. “What if George wasn’t the only one facing competition? If Bobby is experiencing financial issues, it stands to reason that he would allow as many additional vendors as possible to reserve spots for these events. Like we’ve already established, he most likely takes a fee and some percentage of the profits from each vendor.”

Are you one hundred percent positive you didn’t feel a bump or two underneath my fur? I think it might be starting to itch.

“Leo, you don’t have feeling in the tip of your tail, remember?”

Vaguely. I have short-term memory issues, Raven. Maybe I’m not the only one around here with recollection problems.

“We need to get our hands on one of the flyers that were being passed out earlier.”

I purposefully steered the conversation in the direction of the case. If I didn’t, I just know that I’d somehow end up on a hunt for a two-headed horsefly.

That’s a two-headed mutated horsefly. They don’t just grow two heads without a reason, Raven. Did you ever think that Bargain Basement Bobby has been taking bribes to illegally dispose of toxic waste?

“That’s one theory,” I replied wryly. “I think the most plausible is what is currently staring us right in the face.”

A two-headed mutated horsefly?

“No,” I replied with a laugh. “Motive, as in someone wasn’t happy with having competition. And don’t you think that if the horsefly gave you some horrible virus, you would know it by now?”

Fine. Now that I’m somewhat reassured that the mutated creature hasn’t given me some horrible mutant disease, I’ll offer up my own highly sought after theory. If someone wanted to get rid of the competition in order to hone in on someone else’s territory, wouldn’t the placement of the explosive device factor in somewhere?

“Right.” My earlier laugh had solicited a wary look from a woman standing next to her husband. He was currently attempting to win her a stuffed animal at the baseball booth. I purposefully ruffled Leo’s fur on top of his head so that the lady assumed he’d done something cute.
