CHAPTER TWENTY

By the time the team had reached the Sly Harlequin, a line of lavishly dressed, coin-laden socialites had gathered. A pair of burly guards stood by the entrance to the club and interrogated each prospective guest before allowing them entry. Though Kael couldn’t exactly see, he expected the price of entry to be well above the few measly coins in his pockets.

“It’ll be dawn before we even get to entrance.” Mimi stood on her tippy toes as she tried to get a glimpse at the front of the line.

“They’d never let us through the front door anyhow.” Mylo said. “But if we’re quiet and a little lucky, we might be able to sneak in through the kitchen.”

“I don’t know about luck, but I can certainly help with the sneaking.” Luc looked up at the sky. The moon was obscured by a few passing clouds, a signal of coming rain perhaps. He focused on the lupine silver light and channeled that energy in the palm of his hands. “Stay close to me.” He opened his palm and a wave of milky energy washed over the team. Within seconds, Luc and the rest of his friends had become invisible.

Kael held his hand up to his face and looked clean through it.

“Remember, it’s not perfect.” Luc said. “We still make noise and can still be felt, so don’t run into anybody and try to be as quiet as possible.”

“Noted.” Kael said.

“Alright, follow me.” Mylo said.

The team linked hands and Mylo led them around the back of the Sly Harlequin. Before he rounded the side of the club, Mylo stopped, and outstretched his hand to hold his friends back. Kael was about to question Mylo’s abrupt halt until he heard voices ahead. Two people bickering coming from around the corner.

“You still sweatin’ that Formès is gonna find out you burnt his guest’s entrée?” A gruff voice said.

The team peered around the corner to find two rough and tumble looking men in once-white uniforms now stained with all manner of sauces and oils, at least, they hoped it was sauces and oils. The smaller of the two held a container of brown liquid up to his mouth and downed the entirety of the contents in one gulp.

“The guy changed his order three times and that was after I’d started it.” The cook wiped the remaining liquid from his scraggly beard. “How was I supposed to keep up with that?”

“The boss won’t care how many times he changed.” The bigger man chortled and wiped some slimy goo off his fingers and onto his uniform. “Just that you fumbled his lunch.” He downed a gulp of his own beverage.

“He’s never cared about his guests before. Besides, the guy eventually got what he wanted, just took a time or two.”

“I don’t know. Chef said that was a really special guest. You might be begging for coin on the streets by sunup.”

The two cooks proceeded to exchange vulgarities to one another about their cooking skills, general appearance, and mothers, before they turned around, swung the door open and headed back into the kitchen.
