John Glenn orbited Earth three times in his historic flight. It lasted 4 hours and 56 minutes.

The committee chairman says, “I think the loss of prestige in losing a woman in space would certainly be something that we would hear about.” In other words, you think angrily, women need to be “protected.” Just another way of saying “kept out of the boys’ club.”

At the end of the day, the committee decides against training women astronauts. More than a year earlier, on May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy had told Congress, “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” The committee wants NASA to spend its time and money on the moon goal.

You are crushed, but as you leave the room, you overhear NASA employees talking about jobs in the agency’s national headquarters. Working for NASA, you’d still be part of the space program in a small way.
