âWhen are you going to hear from that school?â Nancy asked one night. âItâs taking forever, and Iâm dying to know.â
âOh, the letter came last week,â I said.
Her eyebrows shot up. âAnd?â
I shrugged. âIt doesnât matter.â
âOh, honey, Iâm so sorry. You were a perfect fit there.â
âCome on, Nancy. Iâd have been at least four years older than the other students, all of whom, by the way, would have finished high school. Even if theyâd accepted me, I would have failed out in the first month, and we both know it.â
âThis is a makeup certificate, GuoGuo. Your six years in the beauty business are far more valuable than some run-of-the-mill high school diploma. And youâre fabulous at what you do. What, you want proof? Just look at my brows. Perfect every time.â
I wasnât sure this pep talk was helping as much as it was hurting. She was right about one thing, though; I ought to have more faith in my abilities.
Nancy offered me another beer, and we spent the next few minutes drinking in companionable silence. Suddenly, she banged her bottle on the table, foam spewing in all directions. âWell, to hell with them! They donât deserve you, anyway. Letâs burn that letter. Itâll be fun.â
Pulling it from my purse, I held it up. I wasnât sure why Iâd bothered keeping it. It seemed easy enough to let it go now. âLight the match,â I said, laughing.
âLook, even the printing is pretentious,â Nancy sneered. âI bet the letterâs even worse, huh?â
âI donât know.â
âWhat do you mean you donât know?â
âI never opened it,â I said, shrugging. âI didnât need to. I know what it says.â
âWell, I want to read it.â
Nancy snatched the envelope from my hand and ripped it open. âDear Miss Guo, Shanghai Theater Academyâ¦blah blah blahâ¦prestigiousâ¦blah blah blahâ¦highly competitiveâ¦blahâ¦â She stopped reading, and a slow but certain grin slowly unfurled across her face. Suddenly, her eyes met mine. âGuoGuo, you got in.â
âWhat? No. Noâ¦â
âYes. âCongratulations on your acceptance. The deadline for payment is August 15, 2005â.â
I covered my mouth in shock. âI assumed⦠I was so sure I wouldnât⦠Iââ
âWeâre going to the Academy!â she squealed.
Disappearing to the back, she returned moments later with a chilled bottle of champagne. âIâve had my fingers crossed,â she said. âIâm so proud of you, GuoGuo.â
Popping the cork, she filled two glasses and then in Nancy fashion, shouted out, âEverybody, raise your drink to GuoGuo!â
I covered my face, laughing, because, of course, no one knew why they were cheering or even who I was. Turning back to Nancy with tears in my eyes, I mouthed, âThank you.â
