CHAPTER 18

The diner was locked up tight for the night and I took my weary self to my car. I spotted Teddy walking out of the market with a small bag and I lifted my hand.

He came trotting over. “You look awful!”

I ran my hand through my ponytail. “Gee, thanks. You sure know how to make a gal feel good. I had to work open till close. Jena Lynn is sick.”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean that the way it came out.”

“It’s fine. How ya doing?”

He shoved his free hand into his pocket. “This case is getting hairy.”

“You mean with all the re-interviews?”

Relief washed over his face. Obviously, he needed to talk to someone but didn’t want to divulge secret information. “Yeah. And I found out something that I have to tell Eddie about.”

“What?”

“My dad and Kayla were, you know.” He glanced around. “Lovers.”

“So?” I shrugged.

“He was married to my mom at the time.”

“Oh.” I pursed my lips.

“I know.”

“How’d you find out?”

He smacked his forehead with the heel of his hand. “Stupid me decided it was time to clean out the storage room. I found all sorts of love letters. Kayla wrote something about a pregnancy.”

“Kayla was pregnant? Did you find evidence of that during the autopsy?”

“The internal organs were too damaged to tell. And I’m not sure if Kayla was pregnant. The letter had some water damage. I have to turn them over, right? I mean, I hate to. Dad would’ve never done anything like this. But with us owning the funeral home, it’ll lead to suspicions.”

“Because your dad had the facility to store the bodies.” It looked bad for Mr. Gaskin.

“See! That’s what I’m afraid of. His health hasn’t been good, and I don’t want to put him through duress.”

He’d seemed pretty spry to me the other night when he’d threatened me. “It’s a tough spot, for sure. Um, why are you telling me? You want to protect your dad. Why tell anyone?”

He appeared confused. “I honestly don’t know why I told you. I saw you and just needed to tell you.”

Creepy. Could this perhaps be Mama’s intervention? Or the twins’?

“Probably because we’re friends and you know that you can trust me.” I smiled reassuringly.

He scratched his head. “Yeah, probably. I’m going to talk to the sheriff.”

I patted his shoulder. “Get some rest. Things will seem clearer in the morning. Eddie isn’t going to put your dad through the ringer unless he finds probable cause. They’ve known each other for a coon’s age.” I opened my car door.

“You’re right. Drive safely.”

The second I started my engine, my phone rang. I hit the button on the steering wheel.

Yvonne’s frantic tone came across the speakers. “I’m at your house! Where are you?”

“I had to close. Jena Lynn’s sick. What’s wrong?” I pulled out of the space and noticed Teddy standing beside his car staring oddly toward me. I’d ponder that later.

“It’s Mama. She told one of her care workers that she was responsible for the twins’ deaths.”

“What?”

“Yeah, and they called the sheriff’s office.
