Chapter 8

Ace

“Fuck.” I slammed my phone down on the bar, giving up on the poem I was working on. The words just weren’t coming to me. I was too preoccupied with all the shit going on in my life right now. Yes, I’d gotten Dad to agree to pay my debt to Andre, but I had to get him some information from Becky first. And my time was running out. In fact, I was constantly looking over my shoulder, expecting to see the “Collection Agents” coming back at any moment. My nerves were shot between Andre, Dad, Becky, and my burgeoning relationship with Callie. I scrubbed my hands over my face before downing the last of my whiskey, wondering what the fuck I was going to do about it all.

“In the mood for a little company?”

I looked up to see my little brother, Jasper, sitting next to me at the bar. He gave me a sympathetic smile while waving to the bartender, who promptly took his order for a draft beer and nodded in acknowledgment to me when I pointed at my empty shot glass. I shook my head, a smirk on my face.

“Did Dad send you? Checking up on my progress, is he? Well, you can tell him to—”

“No, Dad didn’t send me,” Jas said, cutting me off. The bartender sat a tall mug of beer in front of him. He took a pull before continuing. “I wanted to see how you’re holding up, and I knew you’d be here.”

“How I’m ‘holding up?’” I repeated. I rolled my eyes. Like any of them gave a damn. They just wanted me to do whatever it took to get the information they needed to get the whiskey production going again.

Jasper gave me a serious look. “Yeah, Ace. I don’t agree with Dad, asking you to get information out of that poor girl. It’s bullshit, and he knows it.”

I raised my eyebrows, shocked to hear him challenging Dad’s decision. I shrugged. “Thanks, Jas. But we both know, whatever Dad wants, Dad gets.” I knocked back another shot of whiskey, loving the way it burned my throat on the way down. It wasn’t White Wolf tonight. It seemed the bar was all out, but it was getting the job done just the same.

He cocked his head at me. “What does Ace want, though?” he asked, meeting my eyes.

I was silent for a moment, holding his gaze, then I huffed a laugh and looked away. “Nobody gives a damn what Ace wants, little brother.” My head was feeling fuzzy from all the shots I’d had, and I wished he’d just leave me in peace to work on my shitty poem.

“You’re wrong. What’s going on with you, anyway? What happened with the dates from the bachelor auction? I disapproved of that also, but Dad overruled me, for what it’s worth.” He took a long drink of his beer while he waited for me to fill him in.

“The fucking bachelor auction. Yeah, her name is Callie. Her grandmother bought the dates for her.
