Zane pulled to a stop in front of a limestone courthouse, and we exited the Aston. He pointed left of the courthouse. “Over there is the sheriff’s station.” He then pointed right of the courthouse. “On that side of the courthouse is the medical examiner’s office and the forensic laboratories.”

We headed left and passed a set of stone steps that led inside the courthouse. We kept walking to the matching limestone building next door. Zane entered a code in the alarm system, and a few seconds later, the door opened.

“Pretty state-of-the-art here,” I joked.

“A definite merging of the old and the new,” Zane agreed.

I stepped inside and was immediately greeted by a flying pixie with a white beehive hairdo, small wire-rimmed glasses perched on her delicate nose, and a pencil stuck behind her ear.

“Good morning, Detective Zane. And this must be Detective Hilder.” The elderly pixie nodded to me. “Dr. Treestone is expecting you both.”

“Thank you, Thelma,” Zane said.

Thelma waved her hand in the air, as though indicating we could proceed. I stepped in line behind Zane and followed him through an arched doorway.

A woman with jet-black hair and a huge white stripe in the front sat behind a desk, clicking away at her computer. When she saw us, she stood and smoothed down her white blouse and black skirt. “Hello. Lovely to see you both today. The doctor is in his laboratory.”

A buzzing and whirling sound came from across the room, and a few seconds later a printer shot out four pages. Before I could blink, four pixies drifted down from the rafters, each grabbing a piece of paper from the tray. They quickly flew to a filing cabinet. The woman in front of us with the black and white hair waved her hand in the air, and the filing cabinet drawer sprang open.

“Thank you,” the first pixie squeaked as she dropped the letter-sized paper into a file.

It was all I could do not to laugh out loud. The paper, standard size to me, was twice as big as each pixie.

“We don’t want to keep Harvey waiting,” Zane said.

Nodding, I followed him down the hallway, repeating to myself not to look back and gawk at the pixies.

Zane slowed down until I caught up. “The woman behind the desk is Portia. She’s a skunk shifter.”

That stopped me in my tracks. “Skunk shifter? You’re kidding? You mean, she literally turns into a skunk?”

“Yes.” Zane started walking again. “She shifts into a skunk.”

“That’s incredible.”

Zane chuckled. “She’s a good one to have on your side when battling a troll that’s gone rogue.”

I shot forward and jogged to catch up with him. “Why is that?”

“Because trolls have a great sense of smell. And Portia, well, she can have quite the smell.”

My mouth dropped. “Are you pulling my leg?”

Zane held up his hand. “I’m not. Scout’s honor. She helped me defeat and capture a troll who had escaped from our local lockup.”

“That’s the best story I’ve heard in a long time.”

Grinning, Zane stopped in front of a metal door and entered another code.
