Into the Keep
When morning dawned, Aislynn and her companions gathered at the outskirts of Willowden with Everwynne and a small group of elves. Their hosts had fitted them each with a new set of traveling clothes, though for Lyzandar they had merely cleaned and repaired his robes, per his request. The elves happily agreed to lead them as far as the base of the mountain on which the Wizardâs Keep perched, but would go no further. Though they were not positive what the keep held, they said a shadow hung over the place and they would not go near it without great need.
Aislynn stood quietly at the edge of the glen, her fingers twisting round the pouch that hung from a leather cord around her neck. The stone that sheâd carried through so much rolled and shifted inside as she anxiously manipulated the fabric of the pouch. Her encounter with Ciaran the night before, was still fresh in Aislynnâs mind. Though she knew they would have to discuss it sooner or later, she was doing her best to avoid being alone with him for now. Ciaran, on the other hand, seemed determined to do the exact opposite. No matter where Aislynn went or what she was doing he was nearby.
âWe need to talk,â Ciaran spoke plainly, gently grabbing Aislynnâs elbow and leading her a short distance from the others. Despite Aislynnâs attempts to avoid him, Ciaran had managed to make his way to her side.
âDoes it have to be right now?â Aislynn asked. She glanced over her shoulder to where Rorin and Lyzandar stood. Rorin looked up, and though the expression on his face was not angry, Aislynn could tell that her Soulmate was less than thrilled to see Ciaran at her side.
âYes it does, Aislynn,â Ciaran stated firmly, crossing his arms and drawing her attention away from Rorin.
âVery well then,â Aislynn said. Obviously Ciaran was not going to let the matter alone. She took a step away from him, increasing the physical distance between them in a vain attempt to ease her discomfort.
âWhat happened last nightââ
âWas an example of weakness brought on by fatigue and too much wine,â Aislynn cut him off, not entirely believing her own words. She couldnât bring herself to meet his eyes. Even now, in the light of day, she could feel the subtle pull between them. It made her excuses seem even more hollow and pathetic, but she couldnât think of anything better to offer him so she simply stared speechlessly at her feet.
The silence grew more uncomfortable. It was as if a tremendous weight had been placed between the two of them and all they could do was try to bear it. Before the kiss, things between Aislynn and Ciaran had grown comfortable, even friendly. Now all Aislynn could think about when he was nearby was the taste of his lips and the warmth of his hands on her back. She felt her cheeks beginning to blaze. Why couldnât they just pretend it
