CHAPTER 17

We stood outside on the village square, just in front of the manor house. The terrified villagers surrounded us in three groups, with the last one slightly smaller than the others. An unwilling audience that could hardly comprehend what was about to go down.

My girls stood to the south of the square together with Merek, Benny, and Legs. There was apprehension on all of their faces except for Benny. The pangolin shot me a casual wink. His relaxed, larger-than-life attitude was a refreshing and welcome sight. The arbiter’s dreaded troops were equally spread out around the northern side of the village center.

Pelis and I faced each other. He held his greatsword firm with both hands, and I was meeting him with my daggers. They looked comical compared to his oversized lump of steel, but I knew they were good enough to take on anything short of a unique masterpiece.

The atmosphere was dreadful with the civilians trying to hold back their panic and keep quiet, while the animus and beles just stood there, unmoving like a black, armored wall.

“How do we know the duel is going to be fair, bro?” Benny said as he stood right behind me, giving Pelis the evil eye.

“How? I’ve got you here. They do anything beyond what we agreed on and you kill them all. It’s simple as that, Benny.”

The pangolin shot me a wide grin.

“Yes, yes, so very dramatic,” Pelis said, taking a step toward me. His body started glowing, and as it was a passive, my [Apex Predator] immediately hit him, followed by [Sapper] and [Stolen Power].

“I’m sorry, Pelis, those are skills that activate automatically, so you’ll just have to deal with it.”

I checked my status screen quickly and saw that just two debuffs had added between 2 and 3 stat points. That was a moment where I came to realize how utterly I’d underestimated him and this whole situation. Whatever. If I survived his first hit, I’d know what we were finally dealing with.

“I don’t like it, but I will...accept it,” Pelis said, readying himself. “As per the agreement, here I come!”

A black mass appeared around him, like an extra layer of armor. His oversized sword took on the black glow as well. I tensed, tightening my grip on both daggers as he lunged for me. The blackened blade came down in an overhead swing, and I moved to intercept it, crossing both blades above me. Mana coated both the kris and the bird of prey, and slightly bent my knees. The sword came crashing down, making contact with both weapons. In all truth, I barely held on to the kris, as it was a much weaker weapon than the other dagger. A wave of power slammed into me next. My feet dug an inch into the graveled road, but I held on.

Pelis lunged back, obviously afraid I might counterattack or hurt him in another way. I didn’t even have the time to think of a counterattack as I hadn’t been expecting such a strong blow.
