I stretched awake. It was warm, and I was feeling surprisingly well rested. There was something at my back too. Something hard, with arms wrapped around me. Had Theo and I fallen asleep after watching a film again? We should probably stop doing that. Mum had been suspicious for years that there was something more than friendship between us. She was wrong. Sure, we flirted a lot. And Theo was gorgeous, or at least, he was to me. But I wasn't looking at him as a potential mate. Just as my best friend.

I shuffled around in the bed, surprised to find something else hard poking into me. That was odd. In all the nights Theo and I had ended up sharing a bed, he'd never gotten turned on before. There really was nothing like that between us. It was impossible to even be sad about that. We clicked so well as friends that I didn't want to ruin that with complicated stuff like feelings.

Besides, if I needed a date to the wedding of one of my human friends, or even those paranormal friends who decided such things were necessary, I knew he'd have my back. Tended to stop smarmy groomsmen hitting on me.

Blinking slowly, I opened my eyes, letting out an odd half shriek when it wasn't Theo's dark eyes watching me. Nor was it his skin. The man in bed with me had pale skin, completely in contrast with my own, which was a similar colour to Theo's. He called it coffee coloured.

A loud thud came from behind me, and my head didn't know whether to turn around and face that threat, or deal with the one in front of me. Well wasn't this fun?

As if by instinct, what was I saying? Completely by instinct, my body began to shrink into itself. Feathers sprouted from my skin in a way that really should have been uncomfortable, but wasn't. I had no explanation for that. Nor about the fact it all happened within the space of a few seconds. Maybe even more so. There really was something magical about shifting.

Not so much about getting stuck in a man's sweatshirt. Great going, Perry.

"Guess that answers what kind of shifter she is," a familiar voice said, clearly finding my predicament amusing. If I was in human form, I would have pouted.

"She's got good instincts at least," Kingsley grumbled from next to me on the bed. Now I realised what was going on, where I was, and who I was with, it wasn't so bad. I could just feel embarrassed about the shirt debacle. Something I'd never ever managed to do before.

"Apparently so, though getting stuck in clothing is a bit of a rookie error." Jordan sounded way too amused for my liking.

Under the jumper, I attempted to cross my wings, only succeeding in getting myself tangled up more and probably looking like I was having some kind of fit. Which only proved their point.

"True..."

"But she probably shifts as often as you do," Jordan supplied, and I felt Kingsley nodding by the slight dip in the bed.
