WITHIN THIRTY minutes, Levi and Jeb had made their way through the woods to the boat launch farther down the lake. Jeb stopped Levi as they neared the edge of the woods and scanned the area before they emerged. Gia’s car sat running by the water, right where Levi had told her to wait.

“That’s Gia.”

Taking Levi’s hand again, Jeb led him from the woods and to the idling SUV. Jeb threw open the back door and shoved Levi inside. Gia squealed with surprise, and before she could say anything, Jeb shouted, “Go! Drive!”

Looking to Levi, Gia’s eyes widened upon seeing Jeb. “Who the hell—?”

“Just go, Gia!”

“All right already.” Gia quickly shifted into gear, doing a one-eighty, and headed away from the lake.

Levi sat back, wiping a shaky hand over his forehead. As they pulled onto the main road, Gia glanced back. “You’re bleeding and…. And who the hell is this Neanderthal?” She pointed over her shoulder.

“Gia, Jeb. Jeb, Gia.”

“Charmed,” Gia said dryly. “How about a bit more?”

Levi ignored her request. “Is your father still out of town?”

Gia sputtered and then said yes.

“Can we go to your house? We need someplace to get cleaned up. I promise I will tell—”

“Wait, can you trust her?” Jeb eyed Gia with suspicion.

“Who in the fuck do you think you are?” Gia downshifted and skidded around the corner onto Main Street. Levi slid across the seat and into Jeb’s side.

“Fuck, Gia!”

Jeb chuckled. “I like her.”

Levi rolled his eyes. “Can we crash at your house?”

“Yeah, but the minute you cross my threshold, you spill it all.”

“Yes, dear,” Jeb said, his amusement clear on his face.

Levi shook his head and didn’t bother moving back to his side of the car, and Jeb didn’t seem to mind that they were sandwiched together.
