Chapter Three

Her question blew him away. Raven had been ultra busy in dispersing his business. He’d have a talk with her after dinner. Right now, how to answer the woman giving him a sympathetic look.

“Well, at that moment, I did, but I thought better of it.”

“Why? If you were bonded to her, then she should not have abused you.” Catriona looked about as confused as Derek felt.

“Do you mean engaged?”

She worried her lip with her teeth before responding. “Yes, I think that’s the word Raven used.”

“Murder can get you life in prison or the death penalty. Lisa wasn’t worth it.”

“I don’t understand. Why would someone kill you for something like that? It would be justified.”

Derek wished the princess would let it go. He looked around, and was saved by the waitress bearing food. His sigh of relief was heartfelt.

His tablemate thanked the waitress and then speared a bite of lettuce with her fork. Her movements were dainty, almost hypnotic. Derek grabbed his own cutlery and did some serious damage to his salad. For some reason his appetite was back. He wondered if it had anything to do with meeting Ms. Princess. A woman that could make him forget all rationale if he let her. It was for that reason once every bite of food was gone he decided to chat up Wulf. About time he got to know the man Raven had chosen.

“So Wulf, what is it you said you did for a living?”

“He’s in weaponry.”

“I am a jarl.”

Neither Raven’s nor Wulf’s explanation made sense, still he’d bite. “So what type of weaponry, and jarl of what?”

Raven’s eyes went wide. If he didn’t know better, he’d think she was a bit panicked. Her husband however looked like he was really going to warm up to the topic. That would be a change; so far Wulf had pretty much kept quiet when Derek was around.

“I run my family’s estate. Take care of the people depending on me to protect them.”

Whoa, he sounded like an archaic throwback, but he’d ask anyway. It beat engaging Catriona in conversation. A sideways glance showed the princess delicately licking her lips. Damn, that move should be outlawed in public. Derek fought the lust filling his rod. He swallowed to clear the lump in his throat.

“What do they need protecting from?”

“Raiders.”

“What?” Surely he’d misheard the guy. There weren’t any raiders in this part of Michigan or the States either for that matter.

Raven frantically waved at their waitress who promptly came over.

“Derek, why don’t you have another beer. I think I want something a bit stronger while we wait on our steaks.”

His cousin looked frazzled as she ordered two margaritas, he assumed one was for Cat, or he hoped it was, and two more beers for him and Wulf.

“So what about these—” Derek froze as Catriona’s hand bumped his thigh.

He jerked so hard he almost tilted his chair backward. And the fact Cat tried to help him only made matters worse. Her hand landed right on the hardness pressing against the front of his zipper.
