CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Verdria
âPlease tell me youâre jesting,â Verdria barked out without turning around to glare at Honryn, even though he had earned a good long glare. When heâd said heâd show her where sheâd be staying, sheâd expected him to lead her somewhere outside of his chambers. âWeâre still within your suites.â
He stepped up beside her to peer into one of the side chambers that heâd said would be hers. âMy living quarters are large enough for ten people. Iâm sure the two of us can get along without killing each other.â
She grunted in answer, not trusting her voice at the moment. Her earlier and very brief feelings of comradery had evaporated. Yes, he might be more of the mountains than she first thought, but he was also a powerful soul mage, a master of deception.
âItâs for your protection, as much as keeping up appearances,â he explained. âMy people wonât think itâs unusual that youâre sharing my rooms now that rumors are spreading about my intentions to make you my consort. Theyâll think Iâm working on taming you.â
âFind a different word, Mage. I assure you; I am not tame. Never will be.â
âIâm aware of that.â He gave her that disarming smile of his, the warm mirth transforming his face from the ideal of masculine beauty to something even more breathtaking. âBut as Iâve mentioned before, we have parts to play. Youâll have to adapt to yours even as I have mine.â
Worse, there wasnât so much as a hint of deception or cunning in his look. And her battle magic didnât consider him a threat. As far as she could tell, he was being honest with her. Had been all through dinner.
âGreat,â she muttered in response to his words without a hint of excitement. She already knew sheâd be miserable âplay actingâ, whatever he meant by that. She was a terrible liar and play acting sounded like the next level up.
âThe hottest season is still some months off,â Honryn said as he tried and failed to coerce her into the room for a tour. âWhich is good for you. It will give you time to accustom yourself to our way of life. We split our waking hours into two segments, sleeping during the hottest part of the day and again toward the middle of the night.â
âThatâs preposterous,â she muttered, while actually eyeing the room beyond his shoulders. It was large and well-appointed from what she could see, with a large bed, chests, tables, wardrobe, and a tall mirror. Carpets softened the stone of the floor and tapestries served the same purpose on the walls.
âYou wonât find it so preposterous once the dry season is upon us. Trust me. Our days are sweltering during the summer months. That has led us to adapt our sleep cycle to cope. You will wish to nap now if you can, so youâre fresh for tonightâs feast.â
She turned her attention back to him and arched an eyebrow, then asked, âHow do you get anything done when you
