“So it is her?” Estelle read the signature over my shoulder. “Is this definitely the book that kicked it off?”

“It’s the only copy of The Adventures of Werewolves in Cyberland I can find in here.” And Aunt Candace had personally gifted it to Ursula, according to the signature.

“Then Aunt Candace must have seen it,” said Estelle. “Maybe that’s where she is—confronting Ursula.”

“Maybe, but why leave the book behind?” Something didn’t add up. “Unless she forgot. Or couldn’t be bothered to look through all these floating titles.” That wasn’t out of character for Aunt Candace. For someone who was a meticulous plotter, she wasn’t known for thinking her actions through in the real world.

Estelle made a sceptical noise. “Unless she wanted to frame her, but that sounds a bit much even for Aunt Candace. We’ll talk to her before we go to the police. I’d rather she didn’t get arrested again, and I think Edwin would, too.”

“Edwin doesn’t seem to be paying close attention to anything other than that runaway thief,” I said. “I doubt Aunt Candace is framing her ex-schoolmate, anyway. She’d have been a lot more blatant if she was.”

“Still.” Estelle hovered on the spot. “We’ll talk to Ursula, but if it’s not her…”

“What are you two talking about?” asked Aunt Adelaide.

“This.” I held up the book. “It’s signed to Ursula Hancock. Does the Manifestation Curse have to be cast directly onto its target to work, or can it work by proxy?”

Her gaze fixed on the book. “No. If that’s the book the curse was initially used on, then the caster must be the one to remove it. That does not, however, mean the curse was cast in the library.”

“So it may have been planted in here for us to find?” I guessed. “The only way to know for sure is to ask Aunt Candace. And Ursula, come to that.”

“Do that,” said Aunt Adelaide, with none of her usual warmth. “I’m intending to research the subject in more depth, assuming the books are still in the right sections.”

She strode away, her coat swirling in the gravity-free air.

I stared after her for a moment. “She’s not taking what happened yesterday well, is she?”

Estelle shook her head. “I think we should leave her alone for a while.”

Once we’d floated through the library’s oak doors, gravity came back, depositing both of us on the doorstep.

“Ow.” Estelle’s knees buckled, same as mine. “At least it’s just the library this time around.”

“Don’t speak too soon,” I said. “For all we know, Ursula has been replaced by a space alien. Or Aunt Candace.”

She groaned. “It was bad enough how my mum was acting yesterday. If it was Ursula who did this, I hope Aunt Candace curses her in return.”

Estelle strode in the lead, absent of her usual cheer. I didn’t blame her. It’d be a fine Christmas if everyone was at odds thanks to this curse.

“Have you seen Xavier?” she asked. “After last night, I mean? I can’t believe the Reaper showed up at our doors.
