# Keep It Real

In the mystical Land of Social, whether we’re talking about kid land or grown-up land (often eerily similar), perception is reality. In other words, if I am not a close personal friend of yours, I will make my own assumptions about you based on what you share.

Generally speaking, we tend to portray the best of what’s going on in our lives and about ourselves. There is nothing wrong with this. It is important to keep in mind, however, that people you might come into contact with online that you don’t know personally (i.e., anyone other than classmates, actual-real-life friends, family members) can pretend to be anything or anyone they want to be.

If you are in your teens, you may be learning about branding yourself, so the general message here is avoid trying to be someone you are not in order to please or impress others. This will only make you unhappy.

Authenticity breeds happiness.
