Chapter 13

My phone buzzed as we were walking out onto the stage, and my hands were shaking from sneaking the pictures. I almost dropped the phone. I glanced at the text. Deek.

Done with your run yet?

I responded that I was at the bandstand and saw him walk around the food truck. I waved him over as I went down the stairs to wait for Greg.

When he got there, he glanced around. “Man, this would be a great start to a dystopian novel. What’s going on?”

“I’m sure the rental people are on their way,” I answered absently, then realized that hadn’t been the question Deek asked. “Sorry, we’re waiting for Greg; then we can go. I kind of found something that Axel had left.”

“The dead guy? How do you kind of find something? Don’t tell me you’re investigating. Toby says the police dude really hates that.” He glanced up at the parking lot. “You need to tell him that I didn’t have anything to do with this. He already doesn’t like me.”

“Why do you think he doesn’t like you?” After last night’s conversation with Greg, I knew Deek’s fear wasn’t true, but I wondered why he felt that way.

“He just seems to have his eye on me all the time. And if it’s not him, it’s your aunt. I feel like I have to live up to some expectation around both of them.” He shook his head. “I know, it’s my need for authority approval since I didn’t have a father figure in my early developmental stages.”

“You seem to have it all worked out.” I nodded to the approaching figure. “I’ll tell Greg it wasn’t you; it was me.”

Greg nodded to Deek as he came up. “Thanks for watching out for her. Okay, Jill, where did you find the smoking gun?”

“It’s not a gun. Maybe you didn’t hear me on the phone. I found a folder of letters about Atlantis Survivors’ last contract. The one that everyone said they were working on?”

“It’s a figure of speech. Where is the folder?”

“Oh. Follow me.” I handed Deek Emma’s lead and went up the stairs. “Emma wanted to come up and see the view, so we did, and then we found the crime tape. Then I saw a sliver of blue over there.”

Greg looked to the area where I pointed. “The area is clean. Maybe something was here, and the crime scene techs didn’t move it.”

“That’s what I tried to tell you when you hung up on me,” I said.

He looked up and grinned. “Sorry. I was a little distracted by the fact that you’d found a piece of evidence that my guys had overlooked.”

“What can I say? I’m good.”

“You’re a pain in my butt. That’s what you are.” He slipped on gloves, then opened the folder. “You’re right. The contract that Keith, Matt, and even Jules said they were working on went dead last month. Unless, of course, Axel actually delivered the songs that they wanted.”

“Darla said that Matt had submitted several songs to Axel, and they had worked through a lot of them.
