The Dreambetween
Lily stared at the door their captor had vanished through, aware now of another sound. It was familiar, a music that she now realized had been building at the edges of her perception since they had left the forest.
The song. His song.
The very song that had drawn her to the portal initially and had accompanied her arrival in the Dreambetween, only it was darker now.
âYou hear it,â said Shard, who had come to stand beside her and was watching the play of emotions upon her face. âHe is calling you.â
The song of the Severed Lord swelled, at once harsh and melodic, terrifying and beautiful. Without realizing she had done so, Lily found that she had moved to the door and placed her hand upon it.
The song rose to a higher pitch, an atonal chorus of shrieking noises blending into a single screech that bled into a beautiful humming tone.
They were in the hallway.
Outside the room they had been imprisoned within.
âThe logic of dreams is still a mystery to me after all these years,â Shard said softly beside her, and she turned to find him looking around at the hallway, one eye wide, the other hidden within a purple swelling of flesh.
He met her eyes and tried to smile, but it came out as a grimace, and Lily reached out to steady him as he staggered slightly.
âAre you okay?â she asked, forcing the words from her mouth against the tide of the song. Her voice seemed tiny and mundane when set beside its soaring glory.
The Severed servant shook his head, staggering again. He stared, but not directly at her, and Lily wondered if he was seeing her or seeing his abandoned daughter again. She took his hand and put her other arm around his shoulder, following the summoning call of the Severed Lordâs song, fighting the urge to abandon Shard, to run to the source of that beautiful and terrible music.
âStill a mystery,â he repeated.
I must keep him talking, Lily thought, then shook her head. Why should she care what happened to him? He had twice abducted her. And yetâ¦
âYou said youâve been here for many years,â she said. âBut time doesnât seem to work the same here, so how can you know?â
He looked up at her, his confusion evident, struggling to stay with her.
âJustâ¦know,â he said.
âWhat year is it then?â she asked.
Shard only shrugged. âYears are not important.â
âWhatâs the last thing you remember before coming here?â
âTurn of the century. The parties,â he mumbled. âSo much wine.â A small smile touched his lips as they found a twisting, stone stair and began to descend. âThe year nineteen-hundred.â
Shard missed a step, and Lily, distracted by the shock that he had been in the dream for over a century, failed to catch him. She cried out as he crashed into the wall and tumbled down several stairs, groaning.
He had half risen by the time she reached him, and she caught the arm he thrust out toward her though the song that swelled and twined around her tried to pull her past him, tried to drag her down the steps.
