Quinton was sleeping peacefully when the volleys of gunshots woke him. He was out of bed with his sword in hand in a moment, and he went to the window and looked out. More gunshots chased the first volley, giving him an idea of where in Razin the battle took place.

He briefly considered retrieving his remaining knights but decided against it. While he had little doubt they, too, would have been awakened by the fight, this seemed like a task easier completed on his own. To avoid questions from the innkeeper, he dropped out of his open window onto the street behind the inn. Another set of shots echoed across the quiet town, confirming the general location of Quinton’s guess.

He didn’t believe in coincidences. If there was a battle happening somewhere in town tonight, the odds were good that it had to do with Rachel. They’d been licking their wounds, but they’d been searching the town high and low for the scholar, who seemed like she’d up and vanished. This was their first lead. He breathed in deeply and allowed the demon to ignite within him, and he ran like the wind before a summer storm.

Despite the size of Razin, it didn’t take him long to approach the site of the shots. He slowed and walked cautiously, searching for signs of the fight. He heard rushing footsteps fleeing the scene, followed by the curses of two men swearing at one another. Quinton shifted his direction so he could intercept them. Two blocks later, they ran right in front of him with their rifles slung across their shoulders. They weren’t any of the town’s marshals, and they lacked the discipline of a knight. There was only one interested party that made any sense: the Family was here too.

That complicated matters, but it also gave Quinton a suspect for the first explosion outside the prison.

He let the two run. They didn’t strike him as warriors worth his time. He went the way they had come from and found the site of the battle soon after. Quinton observed as much as he could from the corner of an alley. Given the casings littering the surrounding ground, he assumed this was where at least two of the rifles had been firing from. But at whom? He couldn’t see any bodies on the street. He looked and listened for another few moments before stepping out into the intersection.

There, about a block away, was a life-threatening puddle of blood. He advanced towards that. Most of the blood was still wet and fresh, and it looked like enough had been spilled to kill a man. Yet there was no corpse.

Quinton stood up from his examination and studied the surrounding area. It was difficult to tell, but it didn’t look like a corpse had been dragged away. But to the north, he found a trail of blood. He scratched at his chin and followed it.

If someone had lost that amount of blood and lived to tell the tale, Quinton would have put money on them being a host, a complication he didn’t need.
