Chapter 23

The Abyss

Leo fell several feet.

Kathump!

The tunnel came out to an edge, dropping to a lower level which happened to be a circular room surrounded by large opened doors. A blue light came from a crack in the wall and hit the center of the room revealing a stone throne. Water dripped through the walls and Leo heard rain beat against the earth above him.

“Where do you think we are?” Craig asked, moving over to the throne. He ran his finger across the ridged arm rest and collected dust. The throne had a shield on the seat. He picked it up, feeling the weight of it. The shield was made of iron. Craig sat it back down. “Creepy as hell.”

Leo approached the throne and took a seat, lowering his head. He stretched out his legs over the arm rests. “I’m the King of the Underworld.”

The survivors began to make their way from the ledge, surrounding the throne. Deter was shoved in the back and he fell to his knees. His little boy seized Deter’s legs and Raymond held him by the hair on his head.

“Unchain me,” Deter begged.

“No,” Raymond replied.

“I beg of you,” Deter said. “Let me be free to hug my boy.” Deter looked around, his eyes covered by a black cloth and blood streamed down his cheek from one eye.

Raymond brought back his hand to slap Deter in the back of the head. Leo called for him to stop and Raymond did. “Since he doesn’t want to serve our queen, he can suffer the consequences.”

“Don’t do that,” Dywn said, stepping between Leo and Deter. “He’ll have his punishment when we settle.”

Leo nodded at Dywn’s order. He pushed himself up, dusting his rear and allowing Dywn to sit down. Dirt scurried around her body and she inhaled it through her nose and sneezed.

“Why would a throne be here?” Dywn asked.

Splat!

Dywn felt something cold hit her hand. She looked to it and a black substance rolled down her knuckles and another splatter landed. Dywn rolled her eyes up to the ceiling to see something black spiraling above her, reaching toward the throne.

“Ahh!” She screamed, wiggling away from the throne. She ran to Leo and he pulled her behind him. The black substance came to the throne and formed a figure, oozing from the top of his head.

The black substance seemed to disappear and a man, wearing old royal rags appeared. His flesh was rotten and patches of hair covered his chin. A silver crown sat upon his head and crow’s feet hung around his neck. He blinked and his left eye rolled out, onto the floor and in front of Leo’s feet.

Leo reached down and picked it up. “I found you a new eye, Deter.”

Hargis snickered.

“Stop that,” Dywn said, backing away.

The man with the crown pushed himself up and his skin fell into dust. His bones crunched and he limped away from the throne. The crown slid over his brow and he slowly pushed it back, using his frail fingers.

The survivors huddled together now.
