He described his new sound as ‘contemporary urban blues, sort of like the music of Ray Charles, of Jimmy Witherspoon’.28 He wanted to find a much harsher edge to his music as an appropriate response to the times he was living in and the unpredictable feel of LA’s sprawling street life:
