The Wall

She turned her face to the wall

yet she loves me

why did she turn away from me

so with such a motion of one’s head

one can turn away from the world

where sparrows are chirping

and young people are walking

in their garish neckties

She is now alone

in the presence of the dead wall

and she will remain so

she will remain against the wall

which will grow bigger and bigger

coiled up and small

with a clenched fist

and I am sitting

with stony feet

I do not carry her away from that place

I do not lift her

Who is lighter than a sigh
