Chapter Twenty-Nine

It had seemed like a good idea to walk to the hotel from the bus station instead of fighting traffic and hunting another parking space. But now they had to hoof it all the way from Spire Gardens back to the car, passing the same sleazy-looking crew as they had an hour or so ago.

The overly-tattooed men hanging around cyclone fences and in the recesses of old, abandoned buildings reminded Miranda of the dudes who’d worked for a client of hers when she’d been on her own.

The extreme minimalist pilgrim, George, hadn’t mentioned the walk was a dicey stroll at any hour.

But at last they reached the Mazda and found it hadn’t been broken into.

Glad she hadn’t had to waste time using her martial arts skills to teach some scumbag a lesson, Miranda slid into the passenger seat and buckled up as she locked the door.

Quickly Parker put the car in gear and pulled off, but when they reached I-85, they hit late morning traffic.

It was mostly trucks and work vehicles on their way to unload deliveries, repair plumbing, or cut grass—and taking their sweet time to get there, but it still slowed them down.

Miranda let out the groan she’d been suppressing since the hotel. “Bagitelli’s three steps ahead of us, Parker. And if he’s got wheels now—”

“All we can do is follow the leads we have.” He sounded calmer than he was.

Still, he was right. They had to follow the leads and put one foot in front of the other. Even if they had to go at a snail’s pace.

She was about to cuss at the traffic when her cell rang. It was Becker.

Hoping for a miracle, she answered, putting her phone on speaker. “What do you have for us?”

His reply was a big yawn. “Sorry. Rough night.”

Once more guilt stabbed at her for disturbing her friends earlier. “Is Fanuzzi asleep?”

“Finally. I’m trying to keep as quiet as I can. Pretty easy reading this transcript. Lots of boring legal procedural stuff.” He yawned again. “Smith’s going to work on it later. Right now, she’s at the firing range with the IITs.”

Miranda’s heart sank. “You haven’t gotten anything out of the transcript?”

“So far, mostly that Bagitelli’s second defense attorney didn’t do a very good job. Looks like he didn’t even try to prove the pianist was innocent. He just kept saying ‘my client didn’t mean to hurt the victim.’ And he said Bagitelli insisted he didn’t remember driving the car that night.”

Hard to paint him as innocent with that video. But that didn’t tell them where Bagitelli was now. “You didn’t call to tell me that.”

“No. I’ve got information on those properties Bagitelli used to own.”

She sat up straight. “Shoot.”

“The farm east of the city is actually a horse farm. Or it was. Sole ownership was transferred to Fiona after Bagitelli’s conviction.”

“Does she still own it?”

“She owned it jointly with Bagitelli, so it passed to her. Bagitelli was her legal name, though she went by Fiona Delacroix.”

Miranda recalled that from her research with Parker.
