THE SKOPI MOVED TOO fast for anyone to do anything about it, least of all Lilong.

She barely had time to Command her blade to attack before the lightning bat was in front of them, swooping low, its curved, ironlike talons out and shiny. Large with beady eyes, it cast a shadow over all three of them. Lilong did the first thing that came to her mind: She Commanded her blade to cut off the pouch.

The blade had barely finished its work, and the pouch had barely left her body, when the bat dug into her shoulders and picked her up. It dragged her across the forest floor, its skinny wings whacking at her face as it lifted her into the trees. Danso and Zaq and her blade and her pouch receded, growing smaller.

Lightning peppered the sky, crackling with ferocity. She might’ve heard Danso call her name, or maybe it was just the wind whooshing in her ears. Her lungs caught too much air at once and pinched the inside of her chest.

The Diwi was her only thought. Save the Diwi.

Lilong Commanded her blade again, quickly, before it was too far out of reach. She sensed it like a faraway light, growing brighter, then it burst through all of the vegetation, ecstatic, obedient, and went right for the bat, sinking into flesh and drawing blood.

The Skopi screeched and let go. Only then did Lilong realise the folly of her action.

Thankfully, they hadn’t cleared the trees yet. Lilong grabbed for a branch of the nearest tree, lost it, and fell a little distance before gaining enough faculty to Command her blade again. The blade flew and dug itself into the tree trunk, flat face upward, and Lilong slid down and put a foot on the blade, grinding to a halt.

The Skopi circled around and plunged, heading straight toward Danso. Lilong gave her blade a quick series of Commands. It slid out, dropped down a few feet, and embedded itself in the tree again, so that Lilong dropped with it and balanced on the blade once more. She did it another time, and another, then jumped to the ground and landed on her feet. The force of the landing jarred her body, and she winced as her injuries protested.

Down her line of sight, she saw the bat bearing down on Danso, who had picked up the Diwi after it had tumbled into the understory. He turned to see the bat headed for him, for the thing in his hand. His eyes widened, and he made to throw the stone-bone away, divert the bat’s attention from him.

“No, don’t!” she yelled, Commanding her blade at the same time. It ejected from the tree and shot forward at high velocity, cutting through the mass of green and stem.

The Skopi was only a foot from Danso when the blade struck it, going through the back of its head and coming out through the front of its neck.

There was a quick splatter of red, most of it splashing over Danso.
