“You can’t make me take that!” Artemis howled, turning to zip away before I spritzed him with Dr. Skull’s Witchups remedy. “Get away from me!”

The little cat was normally fast and probably would have got away under normal circumstances. However, he was under the weather, and the Witchups seem to affect his reaction speed.

Artemis made a half-hearted attempt of getting away but wasn’t fast enough for my lightning fast maneuvers. I whipped the spritz bottle out like it was pistols at dawn and managed to catch him in a cloud of the shimmering purple smoke. The charmed bottlecap spouted off another one of its pre-recorded advertisements.

“Having trouble performing magic in front of others? Try Dr. Skull’s patented calm balm! The only balm proven to take off the edge!”

“Dr. Skull sure loves his balms,” I said and handed the bottle over to Serena, while relaying the complicated times of administration to her.

“Ah, seems straight forward enough,” she said. “I’ve used Dr. Skull’s products in the past, they really are the best.”

“I don’t know what all the fuss is about,” Artemis protested. “I’m really feeling much better. I don’t need any more medicine, thank you very much.” Not only did Artemis sound much more congested than this morning, but a great big sneeze followed his declaration of health.

Dozens of small golden fruit bowls covered the lounge floor. Each one was filled with a strange red liquid.

“Is that blood?” Serena asked.

“Cranberry juice,” Artemis sniffed. “Don’t ask me why.”

“You’re obviously not better,” I said to him. “Let Serena look after you for the next few days and it won’t be long until you’re back to your old annoying self. Oh also, no more ice cream.”

“What?”

“Rebecca from the drugstore told me you had an allergy. You should have told me. You’ve brought this on yourself.”

“I’d rather die!” Artemis cried. I rolled my eyes and petted him on the head.

“Just make sure you rest up and be nice to Serena.”

“Serena?!” Artemis said. “You mean you’re not sticking around to look after me?”

“She’s doing more than a good job I think.” Also I couldn’t see any teabags stapled to the walls, bolstering my confidence that Serena was slowly on the mend.

“Don’t worry Chelsea, I’ve got this. Artemis has my undivided attention. I will have to nip upstairs in a bit to peel back all the wallpaper and freshen up the paste but I—” She stopped herself. “Wait, that’s crazy talk again isn’t it?”

“Just a little!” I laughed nervously.

“How are things with Adam by the way?” she asked. “Do you have any plans moving forward for that?”

“Harper gave me that ring that lets me access the shifter ranch at any time. I thought I might go and check out the village in the day, it might seem a little less intimidating. Do you know Adam well?”

“I’d say we’re good acquaintances. There’s not a ton of room on this island so shifters end up running into one another eventually.”

“Then you know him well enough to see he’s not acting like himself?”

“Oh for sure.
