But he put a stop to it there. He had never believed in the authenticity of the trout. All the rest of the old Christmas song related to farming activities, but the trout, he was sure, had only been tagged on to the other verses at some later date because of the convenience of the rhyme. Going back to the beginning of the song, he muttered softly:

“There was a pig went out to dig—”

Again he stopped abruptly. Nesbit. That had been the last word that Henry Hewison had spoken. But why should it be supposed to relate to Mrs. Nesbit? If there was a Mrs. Nesbit, there was a Mr. Nesbit too, wasn’t there?
